Ha Long Bay – 2 days of adventure on the water

Ha Long Bay – one of Vietnam's most famous natural wonders, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a highlight of any trip to Vietnam. I was lucky enough to experience the bay on a two-day tour that started in Ha Giang after our motorcycle tour. Of course, the bay is also easily accessible from Hanoi, which is what most travelers choose to do.

The landscape is breathtaking: limestone cliffs rise out of the emerald green water, and small islands and floating villages dot the scene. In addition to relaxing hours on the deck, my tour included pure adventure: a cave visit, kayaking with locals, and a short hike on an island.

Highlights of the tour at Ha Long Bay

  1. Discovering the caves

One highlight was visiting a spectacular cave with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. The tour was led by a charming Vietnamese woman from our boat. She told a whole series of funny and mythical stories about various formations in the cave, which you could recognize with a little imagination.

Small impressions

  1. Kayaking with locals

On one of the islands, we met local fishing families who showed us how to explore the bays in small kayaks. There was also the option of taking larger boats steered by locals. Since I was traveling alone, I decided to do that. They take you to quiet bays to show you the natural surroundings.

  1. Hiking on an island

A short but intense hike led to a viewpoint with panoramic views of the bay. The effort is rewarded with breathtaking 360° views of the limestone cliffs and open water—perfect for photos and moments to take a deep breath.

Dinner

The ship

However, you shouldn't have any false romantic notions about this tour. Since time is very limited on the one-night cruises, the excursions are very tightly scheduled and organized. I thought the price-performance ratio was great, as the dinner was really first class and the excursions were very well organized.

The two days on the ship were packed with food and excursions. I had booked a relatively “expensive” tour. The ship and the food were really luxurious and everything was super organized. The crew and the tour guide spoke very good English.

It is also important to know that the ships only travel to a specific pier and then stay there for the excursions and also for the night. Many fellow travelers had the romantic idea of spending two days sailing through the bays. That is not the case.

My conclusion:

It is definitely worth it. An adventure that is well worth it!
